Ice-plant Ecology

You are walking at the warm beach. When you see something that looks like green spiky grass, You have found an ice plant. But some ice plants will be pink.

Ice-plant grows on the sand dunes. They are eaten by birds. Bee get nectar from the flowers. Snails, beetles and skunks live under ice-plant.

There are two types of ice-plant. South African ice-plant has big fat leaves and yellow flowers. It is introduced. Native ice-plant has small thin leaves, and pink flowers. They are not threatened, but do get covered over by the South African ice-plant.
